Welcome! My name is Dr. Beau Pihlaja (/boʊ 'pihlaija/).
I am currently an associate professor in the Technical Communication and Rhetoric (TCR) program within the Department of English at Texas Tech University (TTU) in Lubbock, TX. I have served as the Director of Graduate Studies for TCR since December of 2022. My research interests include intercultural technical and professional communication, technologically mediated professional and technical communication, cultural rhetorics, and materialist research methods and analysis. My recently published article, "Everyday Ethics at the Border: Normative Ethics for the 21st Century" (2022) discusses the challenges of engaging professionally across cultures via digital communication tools. My article "Inventing others in digital written communication: Intercultural encounters on the U.S.-Mexico border" (2020) discusses the mediating effects of communication technologies on intercultural encounters in a bi-national company situated on the US-Mexico border. I completed a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition Studies at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) in 2017. |
